French star Gaël Monfils to play European Open

The organizer of the European Open announced today that one of the world’s most exciting players, Gaël Monfils, will play the tournament in Antwerp this autumn. The current world number 14 and last  weekend finalist in Eastbourne, will be one of the star names in the line-up of October’s European Open in Antwerp. Monfils will join fellow top players David Goffin, Steve Darcis, Richard Gasquet and David Ferrer in the draw.

The 30-year-old Frenchman, who played the final of the ATP tournament in Eastbourne last weekend, has won six titles in his career and he was a semi-finalist at last year’s US Open. The Frenchman is known for his ability to quickly changes playing styles. Combined with his athletic prowess Monfils is one of the most spectacular players on the tour. 

With the arrival of Monfils, following on the announcement of Ferrer, the draw for the European Open, from 15 to 22 October in Antwerp, is firmly taking shape. David Goffin, Steve Darcis and Richard Gasquet had been previously announced. Goffin, the main attraction of the only remaining Belgian ATP tournament, is showing good progress following his injury. The Belgian had to skip Wimbledon, but announced that he will be back in action at the ATP tournament in Umag that will take place in mid-July.
