Antwerp, September 27, 2019 – Triple Grand Slam
winner and Olympic double champion Stan Wawrinka (ATP-21) confirms his
participation in the European Open (ATP 250). The tournament has such an
unprecedented strong line-up this year after Andy Murray already confirmed
earlier on.
The organization and tournament director Dick
Norman are particularly proud to once again be able to bring an absolute winner
to the Lotto Arena with the 34-year-old Swiss. “This will be an extremely strong
edition, it’s almost unbelievable how many top players will come to Antwerp
within 2 weeks!”, Norman says.
Wawrinka, only recently a strong quarterfinalist
at the last US Open, won the Australian Open (2014), Roland Garros (2015) and
the US Open (2016) during his career. The champion was third in the world
ranking in 2014, won 16 ATP titles and, along with Roger Federer, won gold in
the doubles at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
It’s very clear: the tournament serves no less than the cream of the crop
in its fourth edition. In addition to Wawrinka, Murray and Goffin, six top 20
players (Race to London) signed up, former winners Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and
Richard Gasquet. Therefore, the European Open will undeniably be a unique
experience for tennis lovers.
