Gombos suprised defending champion Kyle Edmund on day one of qualifications

The European Open has officially started today and the audience in the Lotto Arena already witnessed a few surprising matches. Kyle Edmund, winner of the 2018 edition, didn’t survive the first qualifying round.

Norbert Gombos, currently placed 119 on the ATP ranking surprised the Brit in three sets. Gombos won a fierce battle in just over 2 hours, 6-4 6-7 (6) and 6-3. The 29-year-old reached the quarter finals in Washington (ATP500) earlier this year.

Bemelmans’ honorable defeat

Despite the nice weather, a lot of fans visited the Lotto Arena today, to encourage the Belgians. Ruben Bemelmans simply came up against a strong serving player. The Belgian lost honorably with a score of 6-4 6-4.

Main draw kick-off tomorrow

On Monday the first matches of the main draw will be played. Both Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Guido Pella will heat up the Center Court playing their first round tomorrow. Tickets are still available via this link.
