The Flemish Government acknowledged the European Open in Antwerp as a Flemish top event. Event Flanders developed a program with annual financial support of 250.000 euros. Therefore, the next three editions of the tournament are secured.
For years, Antwerp has been the hotspot of international professional tennis in Belgium. After the Diamond Games for women, the European Open was launched in 2016 as an ATP World Tour tournament. Until 2022, Antwerp will be hosting the best players of the international circuit. “In addition, the tournament enables our national players to win points for the ATP ranking and to gain more experience,” says Ben Weyts, Flemish Minister of Sports. He and Zuhal Demir, Flemish Minister of Tourism, would like to re-enforce Flanders as an international tennis region with this annual subsidy. Hopefully, this will motivate even more tennis fans and players to come to the Lotto Arena in Antwerp for the European Open.
