Next to David Goffin (ATP-10) and Diego Schwartzman (ATP-13) the Brit Kyle Edmund (ATP-16) also confirms his participation at the European Open. This means that again a top 20 player enters the biggest tennis tournament in Belgium.
Edmund is 23 years old and was already present during the first edition in 2016, where he lost in three sets (6-3, 5-7 and 2-6) to Richard Gasquet (ATP-25) in the semi-finals.
Although he is admired already in his home country, Edmund never made it past the second round at Wimbledon. This year he had a good run at the Australian Open, where he reached the semi-finals.
First ATP final
Earlier this season, Edmund played his first ATP-final in Marrakech (Morocco, ATP World Tour 250), where he lost without a chance (2-6 and 2-6) to the Spaniard Pablo Andújar (ATP-126). A few months ago, also on clay, he claimed the doubles title at the Millennium Estoril Open in Portugal (ATP World Tour 250) together with his compatriot Cameron Norrie (ATP D-205).
Earlier this week at the US Open, Edmund was surprisingly defeated in the first round by the Italian Paolo Lorenzi (ATP-94).
