Thursday recap

American Marcos Giron (ATP 94) surprised favorite David Goffin (ATP 14) on Thursday’s last match at the European Open: 6/3, 7/5. The American, who competes as a qualifier in the tournament, takes on Australian Alex de Minaur in the quarter finals.

The young Belgian Zizou Bergs brought the number 17 on the ATP-ranking to a shaky start in an incredibly exciting match. Karen Khachanov was able to win from Bergs in three sets (5/7, 6/4, 6/4). The Belgian made it very difficult for the Russian. “Zizou played great tennis. We can certainly expect good matches from him in the future. I am very happy to have managed to survive this match and  I will make sure I am ready for my next match tomorrow,” Khachanov commented. Bergs looks to the future with hope: “I have taken an important step. This gives me confidence for my future in the ATP circuit, but I realise that this will have to be done step by step.”

The Canadian Milos Raonic (ATP 19) was able to beat the Brit Cameron Norrie (ATP 70) in two sets (7/5, 7/6), in the first match on Thursday. The Canadian will advance to the quarter finals, where he will compete against the number 20 of the world Grigor Dimitrov. The duo already met five times on the tennis court, of which the Bulgarian won three.

American Taylor Fritz (ATP 28) was quite surprisingly beaten this afternoon by 23-year-old qualifier Lloyd Harris (ATP 90). The South African, who has already won four matches at this year’s European Open, will go on to the quarter finals with a lot of confidence. He will compete against Frenchman Ugo Humbert (ATP 38). Humbert has already won 16 matches this season and is a favourite against Harris, who has won as many matches this season as he has lost.
